Hi. I was sent the link to this forum by someone who previously posted here. My husband and I are in really bad debt. We are considering bankruptcy, but I would like to know if we have other options. I have heard about "erasing" info from my credit report. Is this legal?? Can someone give me some basic info. Thanks!
You should spend some time reading some of the posts here. It is not illegal to remove incorrect information from your file. How you define incorrect is subject to some interpretation. If any part of an entry is incorrect, it is not accurate and complete. Some people have had correct information removed from their files. There are techniques that you can learn here, but there is always the issue of whether it is the right thing to do. The first thing you need to do is get copies of all of your credit reports, and look them over carefully. See what is wrong. Post more specific questions here and people will answer you. There are three posts at the top that will give you a lot of information. Use the search function for more specifics and then just keep reading.
Something I forgot to mention is that there are alternatives to bankruptcy. There are credit counseling services. Some are real ripoffs, some aren't. They can also leave a mark on your credit. Some say it's worst than bankruptcy, but many who have been through the process say after you complete the program many of the bad marks are erased. I have no personal experience either way. There was a post last week about someone signing up for CCCS and there was much discussion about it. The post was by author_22 and was titled something like "Signing up for CCCS next week." You may want to find that thread and read it. There was a lot of good discussion. As with everything, your situation is individual and you have to make a decision you can live with. But at least this gives you a place to start and some food for thought.
