I just checked my credit report and my credit card debt is incorrect, i.e. too high. who should i contact or what should i do to get this investigated or removed from my credit history.

Are you positive its incorrect? What site did you check your credit report on?

Is it the balance as of when your statement is? The tradelines are usually only updated once a month, not continuously in real time.

If you really believe it's incorrect, dispute with the CRA as "balance incorrect." But beware of the law of unintended consequences--if it's not verified, the entire tradeline will be removed, and that may really hurt your score.

I'd leave it alone and check it next month. If still wrong, then dispute it but beware of what Hedwig aptly noted.

They aren't always accurate. They're only as accurate as the information provided to the CRAs. Remember that they are a REPORTING agency.

The main thing is to get the report directly from each bureau and not a 3-in-1.
