Thanks for everyone's posting on this board. I have learned a tremendous amount and am just starting down the path of cleaning up my credit after some silly decisions on my part. On all 3 of my reports I have an entry from Verizon wireless that is being reported as a charge-off of $52.09. This is from about 6 years ago when I moved and missed the last bill. I contacted Verizon to ask for verification and they have sent me all of my statements for that time to show the correct amount. I want to pay them but don't want it to show as a payed charge-off. When I talked to executive relations through PFB (thanks guys/girls) the woman I'm talking to said it would report how-ever the CRA wanted them to. I know that's not right. What would your advice be to proceed with this. The SOL is nowhere near since it is showing write off as of 3-2000 so it will be there till 2007. Thanks in advance. Dave
I'd check to make sure that the account was from 6 years ago, first. Because if it is, then there's only 1 year left and then what is the point of paying it... If it appears to be there until 2007, write a letter for payment for deletion. You will pay, if they delete. Period. They don't, you don't. Good Luck.
Dave, You say the account was from six years ago. Now they are saying it was charged-off around 3/2000. They should have charged it off a few years ago, thus reporting so on the report. I would request that they send you proof of the charge-off date. Im guessing this is what your describing. If this debt is really six years old then they are reporting the wrong chargeoff date.
Here's what the tradeline looks like: Verizon Wireless Status: Account charged off. $52 written off. $52 past due as of 11-2001. Date Opened: 03/1996 Reported Since: 03/2000 Date of Status: 04/2000 Last Reported 11/2001 Account History: Charge off as of 6-2001 to 11-2001,2-2001 to 4-2001, 12-2000, 11-2000, 3-2000 The last payment I think I made was in 1998 or early 1999. So I can send them a letter (CRRR) stating that I'll agree to pay the item if they remove all reporting to the CRA? And ask them for this in writing before sending in the payment. I'm just not sure they'll do it for the small sum of $52. If they won't would it be better to leave it unpaid and showing for the next 5 years or to pay it and have it showing as a paid charge-off for the next 7 years ( in which time I guess I could try the nutcase letter).
