Hello everyone, I've been lurking for some time and think I understand what to do. But my question is, do I start with the OC or CRAs? My situation in a nutshell is I filed BK due to overwhelming medical bills. I have several accounts that are listed on all 3 CRAs as charge offs, not included in BK. I also have 3 collection accounts from the medical bills that are showing as actively open and seriously delinquent.

I know I can dispute some of them as "not mine" and see if they drop off. So do I start here with the CRAs, or do I start with the OC and ask that they report correctly, then try the not mine with the CRA? I also don't want to do too much at once, should I just tackle one account at a time per CRA?

Thanks for any advice. FYI, my goal is to be able to get a mortgage in 2-3 years, so I need to get my credit as cleaned up as possible.

I'm not too familiar with BKs, but I feel like I should give you some direction because I remember when I was a newer newbie (i still consider myself a newbie) and how confused I was.

"But my question is, do I start with the OC or CRAs?" It depends on what sort of TL it is, but most of the time you want to dispute with the CRAs first, even if it ends up being verified.

this sentence: "So do I start here with the CRAs, or do I start with the OC and ask that they report correctly, then try the not mine with the CRA?" tells me you need to read here a lot more than you have. Here's why: Why would you ask that a DF (Data-Furnisher, i.e. OC, CA, etc.) report something correctly when you plan on claiming its not yours? think about it. (i'm not trying to come down on you, just trying to get you to think.)

if your goal is to get a mortgage in 2-3 years, make sure you aren't late on ANYTHING between now and then. thats the best thing you can do to repair your credit. no lates for 3 years will do so much more for your scores (and your chances of getting a loan) than any other form of credit repair you may accomplish in the meantime. If this is your only goal, don't be score driven. Mortgage lenders look at more than the score. They want to see all charge-offs, judgements, etc. paid so that these debts wont come back to haunt you after you get the home loan. If you just want these sorts of TLs to reflect that they're paid (or taken care of in BK) its relatively simple to have legitimate mistakes corrected rather than getting entire TLs deleted. But if you plan on going the 'not mine' route to get them deleted, be prepared for a bit of a fight, and don't admit they're yours in any of your letters to anyone.

Someone with experience in BK issues will be able to help you more than I can, but my suggestion to you is read the FAQs page, the 'stickies' at the top of the message board, and do MANY searches on your particular situations.

    good luck!
