Hi, I,m a Newbie to this site..I am trying to straighten up my CR and get back on track.heres my delima.
I took out a personal loan several years back..Got in a bad jam and could not pay back. Long story short Defaulted.. The company Had reprted it as such..I understand perectly..However About a year later they either sold or transferred the account to another branch office of theirs in another State.. Still could not pay. That branch reported it a bad debt, etc. (One thing different was they added an extra # to the end of the original account #)...They in turn ,turned it over to CA.I still was,nt in a position to pay..Hence once again. Another mark on my CR.And a once again New account #
What I dont understand is why all 3 would be allowed to be shown on my report. Seeing as I only had one loan.. It makes it look on the report as If I had 3 different loans..
In the adverse credit section of my report it says I have 7 total but in fact it should only be 4.. That one company has 3 of the marks itself.. No other compnay has done that. Any suggestions on why what when or how would be appreciated.
I,m just about to be able to do a settelment on the account but would like to know if two of the negatives (at least) could be taken off.
    Thanks

    Hi Frio,

The use of multiple account numbers is a violation of the FDCPA.

You should use this as leverage to get the resolution you want, (which includes a complete deletion from all parties).

    : )

Thanks Butch for the response to my question. I thought it was not legal for them to do that... The CRA kept telling me that it was a common thing for companys to do that and I was basically sol.. I told the CRA that if that were the case then CAs would just keep transfferring the account and stacking the deck against people..They really sounded like they could care less about keeping CRs accurate..
I will definately pursue this hard to get it taken off.
    Thank you for your input

So does that mean that one account can be listed multiple times on your CR as long as it has the same account # listed for each? In other words, one listing from the OC and then subsequent listing from the CA or CAs all must have the same account #? If that is so, I could have sued in the past because I've have a couple of accounts whereas one or two letters were added to the original account # and whereas the actual numbers in the account #s were re-arranged to make it look like a different account altogether.

To be honest I,m not sure.. I think they can only show one entry period.. I had noticed on mine that when the first OC transferred the account the 2nd office added a digit to the end of the original account # which made it look like a different account. They sold the account to a CA and that company showed a whole new account#..It makes it look like 3 seperate accounts.
.. Another thing I noticed was when a CRA shows or adds up all the debt you have on file. It adds everything..In my case it showed all 3 account high balances which makes it look like i have more debt than I actually do.. If a file only showed the original debts, then a persons true debt would be lower.. I,m not sure if this is the case for everybody but thats what has happened in my situation.. You may want to take a look at yours and see if its the same situation..
