Well, I'd say you got lucky by getting turned down by Dell. I do onsite warranty for Dell, and they ain't what they used to be in quality or customer service.
I went to PFB and I must agree with you. Not only did Dell do me a favor by turning me down so I didn't buy a Dell, I was able to find the same computer (without the Dell name, of course) for half the price, new, on eBay. Microexchange thanks them. It's not that I really wanted the credit, I just wanted the trade line.
