Aloha! My credit report has my father's mortgage showing up. It's been like this for almost 20 years and everytime we apply for a loan we need to get a letter from his mortgage company stating the error. We just completed our fourth mortgage with the same problem. We got the loan but it's getting very irritating doing this over and over again. Now we want to get a home equity and I know we'll come across the same problem. My father and I share the same first and last names but different middle names and obviously different ss#'s. I'm glad it's not "John Smith". What to do, what to do!

Have you tried disputing it with the credit reporting agencies? Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion all have online dispute systems that are free and simple to use. Takes about 30-45 days.

    disputing transunion

Whew!! Just tried to dispute on Transunion but I can't even get past the authentication proceedure because a lot of the answers thay gave me to choose from were incorrect ie. former employers, previous addresses and I can't even input the correct spelling of my last name. It seems I can't login with "Dela Cruz" cuz it has a space which isn't allowed. But that's the ONLY way to spell my name correctly. So now I'm in a holding pattern while they look over my concerns and get back to me (they said within 24 hours). Pray for me.

Don't forget to dispute with Experian and Equifax as well. If all else fails, you can mail a written dispute to the agency. They all have addresses listed. Don't fill out any "required" forms or anything, a simple letter stating that you dispute the entry on your credit report will do. Be sure to give them as much information about the entry as you can: Original creditor name, account number, amount, etc. I'm not 100% certain but I believe you will also have to tell them your SS# and date of birth.
