Ok, I pulled my score, now I've got some questions. It seems my credit union card is showing up twice...not sure why tho, tho I doubt it's affecting much since I havent used it in a year (tho there was a 30-day late back in 3/2000 or so). Also in inquiries, credit expert separates them from: requests viewed by others: (these appear to be hard inq's) and requests viewed only by you: (soft? however i KNOW some of these were not initiated by me, ie-like a ton from providian, chase, and capital one bank...tho i dont think i do business with ANY of them). Also, my score was pulled twice (hard) by Progressive Insurance, should I dispute this? And lastly, my score was pulled by my previous employer ...I only worked there like 2 weeks. Dispute it?
I wouldn't sweat the soft inquiries. Most credit card companies will pull your report to see if you qualify for their cards, whether you're prime or subprime, etc. Definitely dispute the hard inquiries. I might be wrong but I'd have Progressive send you a letter saying that your report should have been pulled only once. Then forward it to the bureaus. With the credit union I'd show them the report and see if they'll correct it (Another letter). More than likely it was an honest screw-up, but why should you suffer for it?? GT
Well I think I might have checked on progessive twice, however I don't see why they pulled twice, as the dates are within like 2 months of each other...kinda gay. They should have a warning like "in order to calculate your estimated insurance cost we will check your credit." Not like they even NEED to check that for just a crummy web-estimate...jeezus christ. Oh and progressive sucks too, their 'low rate' was like 40% higher than what it is right now at USAA, which btw didn't pull a hard inq, even tho i added a new (well new to me) car on the policy in jan 2001.
If the inquiries were two months apart then definitely dispute the second one with the CRA. Can't vouch for Progressive. I had Geico and when I had hail damage I noticed the amount they claimed was caused was $5 below my deductible...so I switched to State Farm, took the hard inquiry hit and have been happy ever since. GT
Progressive will pull a hard inquiry every time you use their online quoting system--if you ever gave them your social security number. So, yeah, if you're playing around with their system and quote yourself like 5 or 6 different policies, they will pull 5 or 6 hard inquiries. Fortunately, they only seem to use Experian, and they fall off within 30 days if you dispute them. Either way, according to FICO, hard inquiries for insurance reasons don't even figure into your score. Not that I really believe them when they say it. They do definately figure into your credit expert score though. -- cnswift TU: 581 - EXP: 624 - EFX: 619
boden11, The hard INQs from Progressive and your former employer are legit and can remain on your report unless they choose to do you the favor of removing them. Companies have you sign a release in order to pull your credit report as part of your background check in order to verify the employment history you indicated on the application. You have a good score. The 700 club is definitely within reach by March.
DISPUTE ALL INQUIRES from insurance companies...HARD OR SOFT..."I did not apply for a credit card, or loan from this company"...
