Hi, I just found out about this board and am thrilled as I have a bizarre situation. I am trying to buy a house and my loan broker ran my credit. Out of the blue a collection account shows up for the first time ever for a visa issued by chevy chase bank in 1988. The credit limit on the visa shows to be $1500, and the debt the collection agency is coming after me for is $6500. I called the collection agency and they said they have purchased the account from chevy chase who lost contact with me (chevy chase says) in 1989. The thing is I never took out a credit card with chevy chase. The debt is not mine. And my address that chevy chase had on file was accurate past 1989 until 1991, so there would have been no reason for me to not have received mail. I didn't receive mail prior to 1989 - I never received any mail from chevy chase at all - ever. I don't know what these people are talking about. So, to make it easy for you to understand here are the weird points: 1) I never had a chevy chase credit card of any kind. 2) The card was issued in my maiden name, not my current name. I had been married for about 3 years at the time the card was supposedly issued. 3) This debt has NEVER EVER shown up on my credit reports - any of them, and I have had lots of them run. The first time it has shown up is NOW and the debt is supposedly from 1988 -89?? That is 14 -15 years ago!!! I am totally upset as I am about to lose out on the house that we want to buy. The loan company won't fund the loan with this on my credit report!!! Forgot to state that the collection agency does have my correct social security number linked to this account. I have asked in writing from the collection agency and chevy chase bank (the bank has no record of this account or my existence - says the acount is too old and sent my request to some specialized department for further research) for the original application and evidence of who applied for the account and am getting the run around. I need this off of my credit report right away or I will lose any chance of buying a house!!! Can anybody help me? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!!
I would definately wait for someone else to answer this as well, but my first take on it is that all this stuff ... address/madien names/never had an account ... might be just an aside. What jumps out at me is that this debt is WAY over the seven year reporting mark. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe derog accounts should drop off after seven years and to continue reporting (or trying to collect) is in violation. I would fire off letters to the CRAs saying this TL is obsolete and to remove it immediately. Of course, there is that loophole if you are trying to qualify for more than $150,000 ... then nothing really ever drops offs -- lenders will see all activity you've ever had unless it was deleted. In that case, send simple "not mine" disputes to the CRAs. Hopefully someone else can add to this. peace, delilah
