Im trying to get a mortgage. My lender wants verification of an old Providian account charge off that appears on my CR's. The account is not mine, and I've been disputing it for five years, to no avail. It appears the account was charged off in 2003. SOL in Georgia is four years. It looks like the account has been sold off to a number of diff. CA's.

I called Providian on a conference call last week with my lender sitting beside me and was told they had "referred" the account over to Trauner, Cohen, et al....an attorney's office. I had dealt with Trauner about 5 months ago trying to get validation. We then called them and were told they had sent me validation two months ago but "I never picked up the letter" and it was sent back. I asked her why would I demand validation and then not pick up the letter? (They never sent it!!! That's why...) I told her to re-send it...still nothing.

It is obvious that the attorney's office and Providian are unable to properly validate this debt. My mortgage broker will not put the loan through with it still reporting. I do not know what to do at this point. I have disputed it with all 3 CRA's and it always comes back showing as "verified". The account has "grown" to about $6k and I cannot pay it and refuse to even consider paying this.
    Any advice will be appreciated-thanks.

Contact Washington Mutual. They bought out Providian in 2004.
