I have just been able to get a $5,400 CL increase with Amex! I have been fighting them like crazy for little increases here and there, but then I read some tactics others here were using and then someone posed this direct number to competent customer service reps, and next thing you know, I have an $8,000 limit. A big thanks to everyone who posts their experiences and info here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS...are you for hire??? THEN THERE IS ME...3+ YEARS...NOTHING...AMEX HATES ME SO MUCH...I HAD TO "SPIN-OFF" SOME OF MY BLUE LIMIT TO GET THE AMEX DELTA GOLD!!!
When you ask for a credit limit increase, do creditors usually pull hard inquiry or soft? I'm about to apply for a mortgage and I don't want extra hard inquiries on my reports, but I can use more higher limits on my CC though. I only have 2 credit cards. 1 with Chase Standard Continental Rewards at $7,000 and First USA Platinum at $10,000.
Well I know for a fact that Chase pulls a hard when you request a cl increase. They don't pull one when they are about to automatically give you one. This came straight from the Chase's CSR department.
Re: Re: OMG Thank you Cnet With Citi, it depends on the amount of credit limit increase you were requesting. I asked for a $2K increase in credit limit, and I did ask if they would pull a hard on my CRs, the answer was yes. When I said I did not want it if that's the case and I was about to hang up, the lady told me she can authorize $1200 increase with a soft inquiry, so I took it. And, yeah, you cannot get more than one CLI in any 6-month period, the CSR told me. -- lakpr
I just called Chase and asked how their credit limit increase process works. The lady told me that usually they pull an inquiry on your report, but she reviewed my account and told me that I am automatically approved for an extra $1500 increase without pulling an inquiry! I told her that I'll take it! She increased my limit effective immediately. So my util % went down from 38% to 31%. I can pay a couple hundred and make it below 30% before I apply for a mortgage! Thank you Cnet! =)
Way to go!! Speaking of Citi, if you go to the web site and it tells you you're approved for an increase, there is no hard inquiry. If you ask, it says that they CAN pull a credit report. From the previous post, it sounds like it depends on the amount. But I wonder if it's the same for everyone?
I don't have amex, yet, but wondered what kind of tactics worked for you, short of just calling - which you did. I am sure I'll need this in the future!
The only tactic I used was calling their credit department (the number is posted here somewhere on a post - I think its called Centurian Bank or something like that). I never really used it all that much, actually, even though they raised my limit I still don't b/c I can't budge the apr. I also waited for my scores to go up (they were just barely over 700 when I called). Throughout the month my scores fluctuate depending on when certain cards report. Hope this helps! BTW - the number I used sends you right through to a human being, not anything automated.
