I would like to know if there are any banks that will send
    >a credit card number to your e-mail address that would allow you to
    >use the card number immediatly for purchases...rather than waiting
    >for the actual card to arrive?

Yes, there are a few that I know:
    Capital One
    Citi AA
    Target
    Cobalt (I think)

Forgot to mention that it is not sent via your email, rather when you apply online for their card, they will give you your card number and exp date if you want to shop online.

Juniper sends your card # right away and you can use it before you get your actual card. They send it via mail though so even after you are approved it will take 3 days to get to you.

Citi definitely - my AA card was good for $1,000 immediately. However, watch out for sites that ask for the security number on the card - you won't have that until you actually get the card.
