I got a secured Capital One card, the 500 CL for $99 one, 13 months ago. I have now made 12 payments, and was just charged the annual fee for year 2. I figure it's time to ask Customer Service for something. My question is, should I be asking for increase in CL or for upgrade to unsecured? Do they increase CLs on secured cards? I really want to increase CL and don't care about the $99.

They have been sending me tons of "preapproved" for Cap One Platinum MC and Platinum Visa - so would it be reasonable to assume they would upgrade? (I did pick up one Platinum MC (also 500 CL))

This is my oldest acct since I "restarted" my credit. I do have a couple of good, closed accounts dating back to '93.

    Thanks,
    deb

You're probably going to get the same result from either unsecuring the card or asking for a CLI...either take your $99 back or take a CLI of $100-200. They aren't likely to give you more than that.

As for upgrading, they won't upgrade a secured or once secured card to Platinum...you have to submit a new application for it. I'm not sure if the old card gets you any extra points with them or not when it comes to a decision on another card.
