Anyone heard of Netbank? I got the link to this offer with my Quicken (it looks like anyone should probably be able to apply through this link) for $50 bonus for opening up a checking account or money market account with them. I like the thought of actually getting some interest from my checking acct. It shows no fees, no minimum, free ATM / Visa Check Card, online E-Statements. Actually normal bank doesn't send me statements anymore, I am fully online with it. Just the thought of interest and a $50 bonus makes me grin. I've got some money I was thinking of putting away for a rainy day, and a separate checking account might just be the best way for that to happen.

And as we all know, if you bank on the internet it is that much harder for the creditors to figure out how much money you have.

Anyone who's experienced Netbank let me know how it worked out.

old news man. i got that $50 a few years ago ;)

they work good, i got the account even though i had some bad check stuff. and pretty crappy credit.

All the other banks denied me.

Being that they are in Alpharetta/roswell and i'm bout 10 minutes from them right now, it seemed like a logical choice.

Do they pull a hard inquiry for a checking account?

ok so it's been out for a while.

Thanks for the info on your experience with them. Oh, do you still bank with them? Do they really have no fees?

Anyone else try NetBank? Did you get the levels of service you needed? Other than direct deposit, how do you transfer money into the account? Was there really no fees on the checking account? Did they pull a hard inquiry when you applied?

    Thanks for any info.

yeah they did pull a hardon me, back a few years ago, but everywhere denied me based on my check issues, however this may have changed.

I did had a $500 overdraft with them or $1000 or something but the fees were ridiculuos.

The Free netbank mailers for deposits were cool.

but i didn't get the service a CU gave me. It was good up to a point (NO GOING IN). CU's are chained, so as long as your are IN-NETWORK, i can go to several different credit unions and transact at the counter.

Plus everythings better at a CU. My CU was only efx Score driven (dispute trick!) so i got loads of goodies when i applied for my checking, savings, PLOC ($5000 initial, $9000 now 5.9% VAR $0 fee), CAR REFI (2 car purchases, 1 refi, highest rate was 4.25%), and a visa card which i have no idea where it is like $5000 platinum 9.9% no fee.

The best thing bout the CU was 1 credit pull was all it took for the savings, checkins, ploc,cc,car refi, car loan pre-approval.

Saved me a bunch of trouble at once.

Netbank is cool, but it is limited. The LOC is expensive to use if you do use it, so its kinda pointless. The Free billpay was cool (not sure if its still there). I get free billpay with my CU (unlimited items), which i believe is > netbank.

It's a great bank if you cannot get in at a CU, but there are some issues if you ever lose your ATM/VISA CARD or DISPUTE you'll lose access to your cash rather quick for a while. The CSR reps are okay but snotty about security and it eventually became a hassle..

Good starter bank if nobody else will let you in the door.

Yeah, I vouch for that too ... My credit union gave me a HELOC, a Platinum Visa, a Platinum MasterCard and an Overdraft Line of Credit (15% APR, but no fees if you do overdraft a check) --- all based on *ONE* pull alone.

Something else the lady told me ... they do not pull another report on you until 3 months passed from the last pull. Anything else in the meantime is based just on the old report.

Sometimes, it can bite you in the butt. :)

well ask again, if you pay them $15 they'll pull again ;)

    lol

CU's rock. It's nice to have a loan lady that doesn't quite understand what a dispute is ;)

As a former NetBank customer, I would have to cast a negative vote. I was with them for a couple of years, starting with the dot com boom and online-only banking craze. One simple issue required me to actually contact them on the phone and WOW, I've only been treated worse by AT&T Wireless and NCO. I was stunned. I tried to talk to other people there but it was a broken record. I moved to First Internet Bank at firstib.com and it's a world of difference. They give you interest and free billpay etc, but there is a $5 maint fee if you go below $500 balance. It's worth it to me for the better treatment. YMMV!

I'm with Xavernus on that. We used to have an account with NetBank and it was a nightmare.

Their customer service back then was rude, unhelpful and utterly unwilling to make anything happen.

They also had this annoying thing with holding ip direct deposits and EFT's to our account for 2 weeks at a time. They also held hostage an $8,000 check for over three weeks. Their explanation for all of the above?

"It's Federal Law". If it is federal law indeed, why doesn't my CU and BofA put holds on direct deposits and EFTs?

Not to mention that their overdraft back then was only for checks. So, if you used your check card and went over the balance of your checking account, it would not trigger the overdraft protection and the transaction would be denied. So in essence, your check card was nothing more than debit whether you had overdraft protection or not. Quite an inconvenience, especially coupled with their check holding practices.

Also, their overdraft protection seemed to be very small. I got a 10K ovr drft protection with my CU right off the bat, NetBank gave us $500 and that after we faxed them pay stubs etc. They denied it to us at first.

In my dealings with other banks...I can safely say that any major bank will give you better service, including the online perks.

If you're not in an area serviced by Citibank, you might want to check them out also (they only permit you to use their internet account if you're not in one of their markets). If you maintain an average balance of $1,500/month, the deal is pretty good. Free online bill pay, etc. but they'll also rebate you the ATM surcharge on up to 4 transactions per month. The only downside to Citi is that they strictly enforce holds on checks. Out of state is 4 or 5 business days (I forget which). If you make a deposit and need the money right away, you're SOL.

Other big plus with Citi is that you can get their American Airlines debit card. Might as well collect miles for all of your debit purchases.

I disagree. I have had a Netbank account for 2 years and I have never had a problem. I got the $50 dollars and I have a checking account that pays interest.

As for deposits, my direct deposit is always there at midnight the day it should be. I mail in my other deposits and they get posted the day they receive them. You do not have to wait for the checks to clear.

    They are a great bank.

I'm sure some people must be happy with them or they couldn't remain in business. Out of curiosity, I called a friend who used them for a couple of years to see what he thought. When I first got my account and all was good, I convinced him to do the same. He has dropped them for a local credit union because they kept holding deposits as was described here, and had similar comments about the customer service. I think there are some legitimate issues here. When in doubt, shop around I guess.

I had a netbank account. I didn't like the fact that I had to mail my deposits into them (you'd think that they had ATM's that would accept their deposits here but NO) and it would take a week or so to show the credit and then they would hold them cause I was a new customer, etc...all kinds of reasons.

Luckily I still had my CU account here in town and kept that. I prefer easy access to my money and to be able to make a deposit that isn't held and goes into my account either that day or the next day.
