I'm confused. I know that the original creditors do not have the same obligations under federal law that collection agencies do, but are they required to validate an account if it is requested?

Can someone please go into some detail regarding getting an original creditor to either "prove it or remove it"?

    Thanks!

I may be wrong but because they are not held to the FDCPA, they don't have to validate. I think the validation right comes from the FDCPA, so I guess they can ignore us. Check out the Fair Credit Billing Act though, maybe something there will help.
    Anyone know?

i haven't tried to validate with original creditor, really no need for me. BUT I have submitted a dispute letter (dates, etc are incorrect) and they submitted statements to me (which I predict will be very helpful for future disputes). Problem with contacting original creditor- if you haven't paid them off, you may be digging yourself a new hole to step in (they will likely re-start collection efforts).
