Please tell me about the Xplan through either GMAC or FORD. I understand that this price is dealer's cost, plus a flat percentage above, and that the manufacturer is actually absorbing some of the dealer's overhead on the vehicle. This plan is given to employees of dealerships/employees of certain companies with large fleets/manufacturer employees with auto ties, etc.

Each car supposedly has the Xplan price encoded into the sticker, and can be viewed on the lot, or by having the vin number and asking the dealership. There is no negotiating, it is what it is. Using the Xplan also does not keep you from arranging your own financing, or you can go through the dealership, or whatever suits your fancy.

Bottom line, is there any way I can get a better price than the Xplan price? ( I know that auto manufacturing employees themselves get what is called an A Plan, which IS better than Xplan.) What I want to know is if anyone else has utilized this plan in a current or previous life? Please confirm if you think this is going to be the best price or is it going to be worth it to shop prices at different dealerships?

just thinking about a DIFFERENT car, which may or may not wind up being a NEW car,

    Maggie,

My company also offers employees the X Plan through Ford. I looked into it and discovered that "it depends" on whether or not it's a good deal. For some of the cars that aren't moving so well, the X plan isn't really a deal at all. I would suggest you go to Edmunds.com. They will at least tell you what the average price is for a car with the options you want. If you're a hard bargainer, you might be able to get a better price by haggling with the dealer. If you're not, the X-plan may be a better deal for you.

    GM Family First

I qualify for the X-Plan and the GM Family First Discounts

The General Motors New Vehicle Purchase Program (the Program) provides eligible individuals who reside in the United States with the opportunity to purchase new GM vehicles under two options.

Under the first option, called GMO (GM Order), a purchaser asks a participating GM dealer to order a new GM car or truck built to his or her specifications. After the vehicle has been manufactured and shipped to the dealer, the purchaser pays a predetermined GMO price and takes delivery of the vehicle.

Under the second option, called GMS (GM Out-of-Stock), a purchaser selects a vehicle from the available stock of a participating GM dealer and pays the predetermined GMS price that is printed on the dealer invoice. The GMS price equals the GMO price, plus the cost the dealer incurs to stock and market the vehicle.

Under the GMS Plan you will pay the dealer invoice price and 14 percent off of options and you quallify for any dealer incentives and rebates.

An Example, Chevrolet Avalanche that retails for $31000. The GMS price is $27500 minus $2500 rebate minus $1000 dealer incentive equals $24000 plus tax and title. Processing fee is waived.

Doesn't sound like a goo deal at all. I bought my last two vehicles for a couple hundred UNDER invoice. I have a book outlining certain methods, but the guy has since developed a website:
