I plan on opening a webstore doing some ecommerce.. I want to accept credit cards. Anyone know or can recommend companies for this?

What do I need? I've heard I need to go to a bank and obtain a merchant account first.. then sign up with a company for the credit card acceptance part?? What are fees like? Is it monthly? Is it %? Is it both? Is there an ISP that will do it all? ALl I need is the ability to customize with HTML (all static pages) and the backend database provided by an ISP with the security and ability to process orders..

Any recommendations or what the steps would be? This is for a small business and I don't want to incure fees like crazy.. thanks in advance..

    Ender,

I have no idea on how to set up accounts for online purchases, but I do know a little about setting up a credit card system. The retail store I handle the accounts for purchased their's (approx. $800), you also have a choice of leasing, or renting then purchasing at the end of the lease. I think it is $50-60 a month to rent the equipment (this is for store bought purchases, not online).

The merchant fees are below (it varies by bank, but they are all approximately the same):

    Visa/Mastercard 1.79% + $.20 per transcation
Discover 1.79% + $.20 per transaction (this does not start until your customers have purchased $5000 worth of products using a Discover card; otherwise it is only $5.00 a month - same with Amex). Once your business reaches the $5000 mark the transaction fees kick in.
American Express 3.10% per transaction (see above).

Maintenance fees (monthly) $10.00 (this is for your statement).
If your Discover or Amex hasn't reached the $5000 mark for each their will be another $5.00 (monthly) fee for each of them (alot cheaper than having to pay the trans fee).
