I am sorry to hear that he said no to the raise. I wish you and your husband the best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
You can look at your situation from many different angles and find positives and negatives. The biggest thing I find irritating is that this guy is cheating you well over and above what you actually see when it comes to your husband working an extra 8 hours a week. If he has worked consistently an extra 8 hours per week for two years, allowing for 2 weeks off each year the owner owes you over $5000.00 in overtime pay alone. This doesn't even take into consideration the fact that he is required to match social security taxes on this amount, which is saving him even more money by not paying overtime at the required rate. The FLSA also provides that covered, nonexempt employees who work more than 40 hours in the workweek must receive at least one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for the overtime hours (hours worked over 40 in a workweek). His best hope should be that he never fires you and you are smart enough to file a suit against him for not paying the overtime, you would likely make a great deal more than the overtime he owes you. --------------- I understand loving your job; but by the same token you shouldn't be taken advantage of by a greedy employer. Even if he makes only 20K profit from the business he is making 20K for doing nothing but letting you work for him. I would venture to say he makes much more in the long run from writing of property depreciation, tax write offs, etc, along with the 5+ K he made from not paying overtime. I think just about anyone would be more than pleased to walk away with a 20K profit a year from any small business.
Hal- Thank yoou for your analysis, it is very much appreciated. I always turned a blind eye to what we COULD be making on the overtime for several reasons. Hubby's exwife is CRAZY when it comes to child support, in fact so bad hubby and I have said if we ever win the lottery we would divorce and *I* would claim the ticket. It's tax free money, which saves us on federal and state taxes. I work 32 hours he works 48, but our time cards each say 40 hours. We chose to take the overtime for extra money to pay towards his medical bills, which then turned into my medical bills as well, which snowballed into CC bills, another car payment, etc. So it almost seems as though the OT is a necessity now. I have sent out resumes, but with the job market the way it is I'm not really expecting too many bites. I will stick it out as long as I have to, I'm NOT gonna settle for another job.
don't suggest you posting messages about not paying taxes on income on public forum. We know these places are watched. be careful.
Please try to find something that gives you access to 401K. It is free money! RE the bonds your grandparents have, 50K can be wiped out in one hospital stay. I am glad to hear that your husbands kidney disease hasnt kicked up, but geez, one of you could fall over a pump hose and be permanently injured. I hate to sound like a downer, but I used to handle workers comp, and Ive seen it before. 50K seems like a lot when you are looking at it on one pile, but it can be gone just like that. On a side note, I dont want to see you compromise your dignity. A previous poster commented that you all but own the place, except for the papers. That is true. You are paying for his business through your own sweat. I cant believe you have to find your own coverage when you go on vacation! Id say take a look at whats out there. A college degree isnt everything....
