Hello All..Sorry that this is off topic. My CD-Rom drive on my desktop is not workimg. When I insert the disk, it will not read it. What do you suggest? It is a Compaq Presario, about 4 years old? TIA
If on booting up your computer recognizes the drive (watch it as it boots or go to Windows Explorer to see if you see a CD drive icon and right click for properties) and it wont read a disk, it most likely is dead. If it does not recognize ANY cd drive connected to the machine, check the cables to see if they may have come undone or slightly off the pins they connect to. It still most likely is dead...it happens all the time. Good news is they are cheap. You can get a re-writeable IDE cd rom to replace it for around $100 or under 100 if you don't go for a higher speed drive capable of writing at say 32x instead of 40x and DVD/CD rom play only drives for around $50. They are standard so buying any EIDE cd rom will plug right in and run fine. -Peace, Dave
lol I cant afford to by the Cd's that go in the drive never the less a CD Rom Drive. Great..just what I need another damn unbudgeted item!
I have a couple older CD rom drives. I could search through and find one that works and send it to you (for free) you if you wish. Granted they are nothing you would want if you bought a new computer, but it will allow you to read CD's and install things. Email me if you want and I will go through my collection of computer stuff and see what I got. -Peace, Dave
another thing to check is the type of disc you used. If it's that old, there may be a slight chance it is not multisession capable or needs the UDF driver. Some older CD-ROM drive were not able to read CD-R or CD-RW discs, only plain CD-ROM discs. That's not the case any more but on the older machines...
