I just wanted everyone to know about this... it was news to me (good news). My DHs catalytic converter needs to be replace, we found out today. We took it to a chain auto repair place and they gave us an estimate of 1500 or so... which put us in a state of shock to say the least considering emissions aren't covered by the warranty we purchased. Anyway, we told the guy we would need to get a second opinion. It only took one call to another mechanic who told us that since the car is 96 or newer and has less than 80,000 miles that all emissions parts are covered by the dealer by law. The dealer confirmed this and set an appointment to get the part replaced. This was a huge relief to us, but made me madder than heck that the chain place didn't bother to *inform* us of this little detail... they obviously just wanted our money. Maybe everyone else in the world knows, but just in case someone out there doesn't and is in a similar fix I thought I would post my experience.
HA! Yes I was angry... but more than that, I was truly thankful that the other mechanic was so honest. i guess my mom was right- ALWAYS get a second opinion.
Re: Re: OT sort of... emissions warranty Exactly. Those chain shops can't be trusted for anything. Glad you saved some $$.....
Re: Re: OT sort of... emissions warranty I have an unusual Mechanic: He's extreamly reasonable Totally honest and very dependable. In 20 years of doing business with him I have only taken a car back 2 or 3 times because it wasn't fixed the first time.
