Okay after calling the Leasng company that put the paid charge off on my account I found out it was not for the late rent payment but for a balance after moving out. What happened was my lease ended in Aug 31, 1999. I had moved out three months earlier having finished college and returning home. I paid my share of the last three months rent to my roomate who was also on the lease. He gave notification to move a month before our lease ended because in our lease it said the resident should furnish a letter that they will move out 15 days prior under the security deposit section. However, elsewhere it said the lease would be automatically renewed if notice was not given 60 days in advance and that if terms changes a letter would be sent to the lessee two months prior. He never received that letter and now they wanted him to pay an early cancellation of two months rent. He disputed the charges with them and they found someone new to move in within three weeks so he settled with their attorney for one months rent. Since I moved out already and had paid my rent and given him the responsibility for moving out I thought everything was taken care of as far as I am concerned. Now, I find I have paid charge off listed on my account. I never settled with their attorney or signed anything or received notice that I owed them money although my roomate did and although to them I was still on the lease. The charge was always in dispute until he settled it so can they still put this as a charge off? Sorry I am so ignorant about this. Also I am afraid I may have made a big mistake. I called Equifax after getting my report to ask about it and said the account should have been closed (it was still open after three years) and asking what the charge off was and asking to have it removed. They said they would submit a dispute and I would hear back in a month. I dont even know if they disputed it as not mine or what. They didn't ask me anything else. Should I call them back up to confirm or change to not mine or contact a lawyer or put something in writing. Is it too late now that I have started something and do I have to wait another 90 days?

How long ago did you dispute? Because you did it over the phone you really have no proof of it, but they have 30 days to investigate disputes, and must notify you by mail of the results. If they don't they must delete. You need to get a copy of all credit reports and see if it shows up on the others.

You actually did a smart thing by disputing it. DON'T do anything else as far as Equifax is concerned. Wait for their response. Most likely they will NOT investigate it - but they will say they did - and just delete it from your file. Hopefully.

I am pretty sure they do not investigate accounts under a certain dollar amount - they do not have the manpower.
