Pay collectors or creditors?

I have a past-due athletic club bill that I haven't been able to pay due to some tight financial times lately. I don't belong to the club anymore, I cancelled my membership, but still owe them money. I'm not behind by that much, a month and a half late at most. I had a collection agency call me today demanding money and I told them I would be paying the club NOT the agency. Then I hung up on her because she was extremely rude plus she called me at work. So what do I do? Do I pay the collection agency or the club? What option would be better for me? I've had something similar happen a long time ago and I paid the creditor, which ended up working out better for me in the long run.

Send a C&D letter to the collection agency today include that your employer does not allow personal calls at work. Send a copy to the original creditor. Get copies of your credit reports. If the bad tradeline is list on any report, make any offer of payment to the original creditor conditional upon the deletion of the information from the credit report. Get it in writing first and then follow through with the agreed terms.

I also wanted to state that I'm not sure if they have listed it on my credit report but if they have, can I request that the agency remove the item for payment?
