I have a CA that pulled my report from EXP. Experian lists PERMISSABLE PURPOSES AS: * other creditors who want to offer you preapproved credit; * an employer who wishes to extend an offer of employment; * a potential investor in assessing the risk of a current obligation; * Experian or other credit reporting agencies to process a report for you; * your existing creditors to monitor your credit activity (date listed may reflect only the most recent request). Should a CA be able to get my report??

Is the CA not an existing creditor? § 604. Permissible purposes of consumer reports [15 U.S.C. § 1681b] (a) In general. Subject to subsection (c), any consumer reporting agency may furnish a consumer report under the following circumstances and no other: (1) In response to the order of a court having jurisdiction to issue such an order, or a subpoena issued in connection with proceedings before a Federal grand jury. (2) In accordance with the written instructions of the consumer to whom it relates. (3) To a person which it has reason to believe (A) intends to use the information in connection with a credit transaction involving the consumer on whom the information is to be furnished and involving the extension of credit to, or review or collection of an account of, the consumer; or Sassy
Sassy is correct. A collection agency is trying to collect a debt, therefor they are a current creditor and thus can run your credit at will. The law makes no distinction between hard and soft inquiries, just the length of time they are reported for. Most existing creditors will run a soft inquiry as they are reviewing your credit, but some CAs are real scumbags and pull hards instead, just to piss you off and screw your credit up more.
This particular CA did NOT post any derog, they just pulled a report. I am not sure who they are or what they are looking for. What should I do? Thanks.
I hear that. In my case it wasn't CA but MBNA. They pulled 4 hard ones in a week, then next week wrote off the debt. In my opinion, you would probably want to lay low for now and watch their next move. Or, if you are 100% sure that you owe no money to anybody, I would contact the CA and ask whats going on.
