Just got a copy of my Experian report (696!)... but it shows a bunch of inquiries (hard) lately into my report - a store credit card that has been closed for 3 years and Am Exp, etc. I've never applied for an Am Exp and don't understand why they'd pull my whole credit report.

I went to the website but they don't list a number - just email addresses and I want to talk to a human being.

The Experian site is cool - I was fiddling with the simulator and if those uncalled for inquiries go away, that could potentially increase my score about 10 points so I'll be over 700... yippy skippy!

Since American Express rarely if ever verifies disputed inquiries, I wouldn't bother dealing with their bureaucracy. Instead, log back into Experian, pull up your online report, and dispute the inquiries right online. It's pretty straightforward (there are "dispute" buttons next to each item). Simply tell the truth and type "Did not apply for credit with AmEx" as a comment for each AmEx item.

You have a bigger problem. You need to make sure you're not a victim of identity theft.

Call Amex New Accounts to make sure no one else submitted an application using your identity: 1-800-962-7227 (manipulate the prompts to speak w/ a rep). If there's an application on file, ask to speak with their Account Security Dept.

Also call the credit dept. of the other store card issuer to verify the same.
