__________________________________________________ Same reason I don't sign that electronic book for UPS deliveries! At any rate I feel my signature is mine and mine alone and it is still my decision when and if it will be put on a piece of paper or document of any kind. Tuit
So? Are you saying this makes it right bc DMV did it? Would they have denied you the license bc you refused to allow them to copy your signature? Is this a new law that allows DMV to do this? Would really like to know. Tuit
I don't sign any of my credit cards. My reasoning is I want them to ask me for ID. Even if I did sign them someone could very easily go charge anything and everything without anyone asking for a signature. If I don't sign it I hope the store asks for ID and gets the jerk. I don't mind pulling out my driver's license to prove my identity. Could someone sign my card and use it all over the place..sure, but that's the chance I take. Dani
People still write checks at businesses?? Wow.... I was at this Auto parts shop last night and a lady wrote a check......the whole transaction took TEN YEARS! Had to call for authorization, etc. Total B.S. I guess on a flip note, if a person (like myself) refuses to carry a Visa Check card and has no credit cards, then check or cash is the only way to go...unless you have a plain non affiliated ATM card (like I do).
They WON'T give you the license with-out it (SIGNATURE)!!! NOW COLORADO REQUIRES SS# BE GIVEN TO THE DRIVER'S LICENSE PLACE...I LEFT IT BLANK...THEY SENT THE RENEWAL PAPERWORK BACK WITH A LETTER SAYING BASICALLY "IF YOU WANT A LICENSE...GIVE US YOUR SS#" Luckley it WON'T apperar on the license...BUT THEY HAVE IT, even though I don't want them to have it!!! I SAID I AM NOT APPLYING FOR CREDIT, YOU ARE NOT MY EMPLOYER, AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TAXES!!! UNDER PROTEST, HERE IT IS!!!
To further this interesting discussion......what makes the DMV any different from the CRAs????? So are you saying that the next time you apply for a credit card you are NOT going to give them your SSN? SSN is supposed to be use for Employment purposes and taxes, right?
Sorry hit the wrong button! Anyway George I understand having to sign the application, what I don't understand is their authority to duplicate your signature at will? Good for you that you provided your ss# under protest! Now that you have the license in hand you can at least investigate their authority to demand that you provide it. As you said, what purpose do they have for demanding your ss#? Tuit
They always say NO SS#...NO CREDIT CARD (although they probably can get a credit report with-out it)...I REFUSED TO GIVE IT TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY...THEY GOT THE CREDIT REPORT WITH-OUT IT!!!
I have a different take on this - while I find it annoying when they ask me for other id, I understand it's to aid in obstructing fraud, but the only place that has done this to me is Wal Mart (and it was a $6 charge!). But what I resent is some 16 year old telling me my signature doesn't match. My mom was a certified graphoanalysis. In simple terms a handwriting analyst.... she could tell if I had an upset stomach when I wrote something, if I was upset or if I was mad, was having back pain or any number of things. The court system uses graphoanalysts quite frequently. Graphoanalysis is a science, and it takes years of study to master it. I sincerely doubt that many of the people working a register have taken the steps necessary in learning how to truly detect discrepencies in signature. Sure, there are blatant differences in signatures - but if I was gonna use someones card illegally, I'd have taken some time practicing their signature... and in that case, how is someone who knows nothing of graphoanalysis going to make an accurate call? They're not. They're just looking for the obvious, which may weed out the idiots trying to use someone elses card... but when I'm trying to use my OWN FREAKIN' CARD and it's declined becuase someone still wearing braces and riding the school bus doesn't think my signature is my signature, then yeah, I get kinda pi**ed. No one signs their name exactly the same each and every time. There are subtle and sometimes blatant differences, such as the slant, the width of the letters, where you cross your t's, where you start and stop your letters, etc. Ozzy.
I have absolutely no problem with producing ID when I am making a transaction. I know they are trying to protect themselves and me from fraudulent activity. I draw the line at anyone being allowed to copy and reproduce my signature bc of the potential fraud this could create. If copies of, and not my original signature can be used to demonstrate that I personally entered into an agreement or encurred a debt etc., then I have grave concerns with respect to another area for potential fraud to occur. Is this going to be the new norm? Tuit
You have the right to show all the id you want...BUT I ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO SIGN MY CARDS AND REFUSE ADDITIONAL ID!!! I also have the right to DEMAND the sale be VOIDED and let them keep all their STUFF if they insist in requiring id!!!
You Bet You Do George! I agree with you and that is my point! We all have the right to produce or not produce ID, at least so far we still have these rights! If we don't like their requirements for a transaction then we have the option of not doing business with them! Simple as that!
You never had a credit card stolen have you? I am a 32-year-old white, Irish female who had her purse stolen by a 19-year-old African-American MALE, who in the course of two hours charge up all my cards at gas stations and drug stores. I am offended when I donâ??t get asked for my photo ID, I ask on every one of my current cards. When someone asks I get that warm tingly feeling, like when the 7-11 dude still asks for my ID when I buy my Bud Light.
OK...BUT I GET OFFENDED!!! AND THEY ARE NOT FOLLOWING CREDIT CARD POLICY TO ASK FOR ID ON A SIGNED CARD... And I NEVER need ID to buy my drug of choice...PEPSI Agree to disagree...
George I know what you mean when you say you get offended! I opened a checking account to deposit checks I receive when I have garage sales. Over a period of time some of those checks came back NSF (4 or 5 of them in as many months) anyway I always had enough money to cover them so I was never ever overdrawn but I received a notice from the bank that my account was closed bc of them. I went to my main bank and asked how I could handle this type of situation so that I didn't get in trouble with them too and they told me to cash the checks directly at the bank they were written on. I took a check to the customers bank and they shoved an ink pad over and told me to put my finger on it. I said what do you want me to do that for? The teller says so you can put your fingerprint on the check. I said you have my drivers license and two ID'S why do you need my fingerprints too? Bank policy she says, well I said....maybe you have an ink pad I can sit on....she says of course not, I said then give me the check back, I'll cash it at my own bank. When I have a garage sale I have a big sign that says "No Checks Accepted from XXXXbank, they do not honor their customers checks when presented for payment". Sorry to vent, but it was the first time I ever encountered this and I was absolutely mortified and offended by it! All this for a $20.00 check? I wonder how much longer it will be legal to have actual cash????? Tuit
LOL!!! Good comeback! On somewhat of a tangent, a while back my wife and decided it was time to swtch banks. We were attracted by all of the No Fee Checking adevertisements coming from Washington Mutual. Since we could never maintain the minumum need at our bank to get no fees, that sounded pretty good. So we go over there, get all of the paperwork doen to open a new account, and they asked for ID. I took out my driver's license, and they said they needed a credit card. How the hell does that identify me, I asked? Bank policy was the best they could come up with. We didn't have any credit cards at that point, so we left with our tails between our legs and went back to Union Bank. Now, some time later, while we're not exactly rolling in it, we do maintain the minimum balance needed for no fees. We've even got credti cards. But, I will never darken the door of a Washington Mutual branch again. Just the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.
Quixote, with all these policies and safeguards they now want to make us go through, you really have to wonder just why fraud is so rampant. Its like locking your car....it only keeps the honest guy out...the crook has it opened faster than you could unlock it with your key. :-0 Tuit
