Proper summons service of a CA

A process server came by house twice in the last couple weeks to serve me with a court summons as Im being sued by a collection agency in civil court. The first time nobody was home and he just left. The second time I also was not home, but he left a business card with my elderly father. Its been two weeks now and the guy hasn't come back. Does his leaving a business card with a third party (my father) constitute proper legal service of this summons upon me? Im afraid that the CA will say that they served me and thus they will win a default judgement in court if I don't respond within 21 days of my being served.

What really irks me is that I've called the court house once a week to see If I have any cases pending against me and they told me that a company has filed to begin legal action but there is no way for the court to tell me if that company has filed a proof of service until ONLY after a default judgement is entered!! WTF is that all about!? I now have NO way of knowing if a case is pending against me until ONLY after it is LOST? How can this be??? I thought I had to be informed if a case is filed against me in civil court? I know for sure that this CA is going to say that they served me a proper summons, I just won't know about it until I lose this case by default. Doesn't the CA have to file papers with the court within a few days of their serving me the summons showing that they served them upon me and thus the clock starts ticking????? HELP!
