I am in a situation where the changing of my SSN might become necessary. Has anyone done this? And what are the possible problems this will cause?
Well.. depends how you are doing it... Are you doing it simply to start over? Or have you had your identity stolen? There's very few instances where changing your SSN is legally permitted. What are your circumstances? That'll give us a better idea of how to respond...
SSA MUST BE THE ONE TO CHANGE IT FOR YOU...and they have very few reasons that qualify for a change. If you are going to some service that PROMISES you can get a new credit report and new SS# and new idenity...THEIR LYING!!!
To make a long story short, one of my relatives had used both my identity (name, ssn, and dob) for both criminal and financial wrongdoings. I previously posted where he had used my id to go through the court system in Oklahoma and got away with it. Not only did he do a pretty good job of messing up my credit report, but he was nice enough to make sure I was convicted of a felony by standing in front of the judge in OK and plead guilty to a theft charge using all of my personal info. I filed police reports in both OK and here in CO where I am located. My local PD suggested I change my SSN and use the police reports, court records, and credit reports at my local SSA office to change my SSN. I really see no other way of truly ensuring that this won't happen with my relative again without changing my SSN but I have heard it can cause another huge mess if I do so.
