I recently received my monthly statement and found several charges that are not my own. I called their lost/stolen number to report my card lost, as I cannot find the card in my wallet. I do have all of my other cards in my possession, just this one seems to be mysteriously missing. Anyways, they treated me like I had made the charges and was trying to get away with not paying for them.

My question is this-what exactly do credit card companies do in the way of investigation on accounts reported lost or stolen? I cannot get any answers from the company as to what they are actually doing to try and clear this matter up. Am in for a long battle?????

    Any advice/answers are greatly appreciated...

This is where customer service becomes very important.

If Providian seems to be uncooperative, I'd suggest you go to your local police station and file a report with them, simply state in the report, your card went missing on [date], you believe it may have been stolen from your wallet. There are charges on your statement you do not recognize...etc... then make a copy of the report. Providian should also be sending you a form for you to fill out. However, it may be a good idea to write up a letter yourself and list charges that are not yours, and include a copy of the police report with it. I say this because calling them does not preserve your rights, but writing them does. Be sure to send everything CRRR.

Make sure they've blocked the stolen card. Then, dispute the unauthorized charges in writing (send CRRR).
