Message taken from their web site, also similar one on their Getsmart card's automated telephone system. Special Message to our Customers: NATIONAL EMERGENCY CAUSES MAIL DELAYS We are shocked and saddened by the recent acts of terrorism. We want to assure our customers that our business operations are functioning properly, with one exceptionâ??the postal service has advised us to expect some mail delays. To ensure timely receipt of your payment, we encourage you to either mail your payment early, pay online at www.providianservices.com (for registered users), or pay by phone using the Customer Service number on the back of your credit card or on your monthly statement. Thank you.
I am not a Providian fan, but that is much better than what I have heard CCB has done. The Federal Government has asked banks to be sensitive to the victims and their families, but the rest of us should really comply. www.creditsense.com
The ability to pay on time is not an issue for me being as I live in Boston and their payment center is in Manchester, NH., about a 50min drive. If you don't live in New England though it becomes a bit unfair. If you have two Providian accounts, which I do, Getsmart and Gold, you can only access one online to pay via their online services. To pay by phone, which I'm sure they hope you do, you will be charged $4.95. Being that the only delay in our mail sytem is delivery, I don't think their losses would be that great to let a reasonble postmark date constitute date of payment received and let it go without mention. -Om
I agree. Mail is being transported by truck now instead of by air. This is very insensitive. I too have 2 PVN cards, they put us in a difficult position. I just transeferred most of that (tiny) balance to another card. Thank heavens for Yahoo pay direct.
That is why I also do my banking online via Suntrust and BofA...Hated on counting on the Postal Service anyway....
I have a citibank checking account and use there free online banking to send out all my payments. Saves me time and stamps.
It would be good if you had a billing date like ALWAYS the 22nd...ALWAYS mailed on the 23rd...ALWAYS due on the 20th... SOMETHING YOU COULD COUNT ON!!!
I pay a majority of my bills on-line as well either through the creditors site directly or through Checkfree. I see that people have been using their bank's bill pay service to pay ALL of their bills. This is fine, however.....there are some companies that aren't set up to receive payments electronically. In this case, the bank basically cuts a check and mails it to them. I have the same problem with Checkfree and Macy's. Before when Checkfree was Transpoint, they use to send my Macy's payment electronically and it posted in a matter of days. Now they basically write Macy's a check and mail it to them. Macy's gets the check, credits my account, then takes FOREVER to cash the check. The check them shows up on my bank statement as check #5xxx (I'm only in the 1600's for checks). My theory is that it would be faster if I just mailed Macy's a check as opposed to Checkfree cutting a check and mailing it. So to those of you who use your bank to pay all of your bills, you might want to evaluate each lender to see who is getting paid electronically and who isn't. The ones that they are cutting checks to, you might want to consider just mailing the payment directly until this whole mail issue is resolved.
I JUST WANT EVERYBODY TO DO "DIRECT BILLING"... I HAVE DIRECTV, AT&T@HOME, VOICESTREAM (CELL), AOL, MCI, ALL DIRECT BILL MY CREDIT CARD...I WANT MY TRASH, ELECTRIC, GAS, LOCAL PHONE, SEWER, ETC. TO DO THE SAME...
If you have an american express, you may be able to do that. I am not sure about the trash, but a lot of other mundane things can be directly billed to amex. www.creditsense.com
I use B of A's homebanking to pay all of my bills (you can also do it by phone if you don't have a computer). Just for info though, Providian is not set up (at least not with BofA) to accept the EFT payment. BofA has to mail them a check. I always pay my one Providian on line through their site. The 2nd one I can't of course so I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed. I also kind of believe that they will be understanding about late payments and not ding you for the next month or two. They just don't want to advertise this fact in fear that anybody will think they can now pay their bill late regardless of their circumstances.
I called Providian just before I read this thread. I was surprised and saddened by their attitude. Basically, if you're late, then you should have mailed it earlier. You knew there was a national crisis. How could you not consider Providian's needs at a time like this?
