A friend of mine told me that a exec. office rep quite rudely told her she could not get a Providian card without a checking account. Is this the case for every Providian card holder here, that they had to have one for approval??

Most issuers would prefer their customers to have a checking account. It shows some sign of financial stability. If you are able to obtain or maintain a checking account, they probably think you have some positive financial skills. It is probably more of an issue with subprime lenders. They are already taking on great risk by issuing cards to customers with unproven credit histories. JMO

I am actually a little amazed by this.
    Regardless,
Considering Providian's poor financial state lately, I'd pass.

I'd never put deposit funds into Providian. You'd have better long-term chances of getting it back by going to Vegas and gambling.

Go get checking account alot of banks have free checking so it may cost you nothing the 1 yr. It also makes your life easy asking people buying money orders.

Don't know if it's the same thing but when I applied online for Target they ask also if you have a checking and/or savings account. I think it does show some sort of stability to them.

My hubby was turned down for the getsmart visa because he had no checking account. We explained that we did not need one because we pay our bills online through our credit union for free. They told us we could send in a letter from the credit union and they would reconsider.

I checked Creditnet and decided we did not want the card!!!!

I though it was silly, but the points made here do make sense. :)

My boyfriend had a Providian with no checking account.

I have a Providian card with a limit of over $3500, but they are real pricks to deal with....it's hard to get increases with them and twice i asked to have my interest rate reduced and it was declined, but I'm calling them again tomorrow because their rates are absolutely ridiculous, especially with all the rates dropping through the floor recently!

I'm going to be refinancing my mortgage in a few weeks, and it will be paid off and cut up....I don't like them!
