Like everyone else here complaining about Providian, I too have had perfect payments, no lates or over limits in the 2 years I've had the card. I just went online to check my new statement and I get a notice stating my providian visa has been converted to an Emerge mastercard. Anyone heard of this one?

It is/was a providian visa gold. Now it's going to be an "Emerge" mastercard. I've had it sockdrawered since August and don't intend on using it again, just paying it off. Had intended on keeping it open for ratios only since it is my oldest account.

I have no idea who Emerge is and nor what the terms are. The ONLY notification I received so far was online when I tried to access my account there was a notice that effective Monday, 10/14/02 my providian visa has been converted to an Emerge mastercard. I e-mailed the cs address given but still no reply. I just got off the phone with Providian. Automated system gives my current account info, balance, payment due date and available credit (so I guess they at least didn't close it), but the rep had no information other then to transfer me. Once I was transferred it was hopeless, no way to get a live rep at all. So it sounds like it's still held by good ole Providian. Time will tell.

Thanks! This is actually a short version of an old AOL account name I used to have. I tend to stay with things that are easy to remember.

I just checked mine and hubby's also. We got the same message online. I can't even get into the website, keep getting the busy or broken server message.

This really stinks. (I wish we had the face icons like other boards do cause mine would be the mad one!) I was actually going to use it this weekend. Now I'm not sure if it will work...I hate providian.

    EMERGE....ARIA......

Emerge - doesn't even sound PRIME.
I also saw at cardtrak.com that they have reopened ARIA - with a starting limit of $250.

Never was sorry I closed them a year or two back.

My Getsmart and husband's Providian were changed to an Emerge card. I just called Mastercard and Providian and neither was helpful. Providian indicated that nobody would be available to speak with at Emerge until tomorrow. Both of our accounts were closed with zero balances. The one account we still had, I paid off with a bt.

I'm curious; the people getting converted to Emerge, did you get one of those nasty interest rate increase letters recently? I got a letter about 2 weeks ago stating my APR was going from 24% to 29% but it looks like Providian still owns the account. I can't figure out what criteria they are using to determine who gets closed, switched, or just rate-jacked.

Did most of you have decent credit before the switch? My scores are all in the 500's so I'm not surprised by the increase, but I don't understand why they would sell or close a paid on time account belonging to someone with good credit.

From what I've read, they appear to be trying to get away from the sub-prime market, while keeping most of their prime to mid-range customers. Whatever the reason, it sure is screwing up a lot of good customers.

I received the same message when I logged into my account. My Getsmart card was converted, but the other account still appears to be with Providian.

I am thinking that Emerge has to be Compucredit (Aspire), because they are purchasing Providian accounts and they also purchased a call centers. See story below...

    *****************************************

Company to Acquire Credit Card Facility of Providian
ATLANTA, GA, September 9, 2002 - CompuCredit Corporation (NASDAQ: CCRT) today announced that it has agreed with a subsidiary of Providian Financial Corporation (NYSE: PVN) to hire approximately 175 employees, purchase certain assets and assume the lease on a 19,000 square foot portion of the credit card operations facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. The transaction, which remains contingent upon closing conditions being met, is currently expected to close in conjunction with the recently acquired portfolioâ??s system conversion in mid-October.
â??Not only do we believe that this transaction is a great opportunity to add qualified and motivated employees to our CompuCredit team,â? said Rick Gilbert, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of CompuCredit, â??but we also believe that it is a great way to smoothly transition the servicing of the receivables recently acquired from Providian. Providianâ??s management team was very eager to find jobs for these employees, and has worked diligently with us to make this a successful transition.â??

I checked out compucredits site and they only offer Visa's, my providian visa is being converted to an emerge mastercard. Notice it states converted, not sold, so it looks like providian may be opening a new line? I still haven't been officially notified by postal mail.

When I talked to Providian they said it was another part of there company. They did not specify what part though and she knew nothing about the company if it had a website etc...

The reason I am assuming that it is possibly a part of Compucredit is because they are keeping some of Providian's staff, along with the office is Salt Lake City, which would give them better access to converting accounts.

I could be wrong, but it would make sense being that I can't find a SHRED of information on Emerge anywhere on the internet.
