Well I called providian back ,and asked to speak to someone in the retention dept.I told the rep that I like doing buisness with providian and I want to use my card but I just couldnt afford to pay the 23.9% apr.And she said let me see what I can do and she offered me a 19.8 effective on dec 23. Well so much for waiting six months, my account is only 3 months old. I also had the annual fee waved before I used the card. Thanks everyone for your hepful tips.
I'm not sure why river's advice came as news to you. Everyone on this board for over a week knows that. A simple search would also have discovered it, as it would discover that after 2-3 more talks with Providian Retention (keep 2-3 month intervals between talks), you can have your APR further reduced to 16.9%, add a grace period to your card, and substantially increase your credit limit. I talked to theire retention dept 2 weeks ago and the rep told me my account was not open long enough and she wouldnt budge. The lady I talk to today was very nice, and I did even threaten to cancel the card.
