Does anyone know if/when Providian will upgrade to it's platinum card? I started out with classic blue card in '97, was upgraded to Gold in Jan '00. Started with $400 limit secured, now $5,700 unsecured. Thanks for any feedback!

I'm still trying to figure out what Providian is doing with their accounts as far as classic, gold, etc. What's funny is that I have a Gold Visa (secured w/ $49) with them with a limit of $300! I'm curious as to see what the lowest Platinum limit starts out with?????

I'm as baffled as you are about this. Gold is advertised on TV as having a higher limit than classic. Platinum is not really explained. I know that gold and platinum come with extra amenities such as car rental insurance (the standard stuff) but otherwise I can't tell the difference. The credit limit doesn't seem to enter into it (at least as between classic and gold).

Until recently, Providian seemed to maintain a strict separation between its Classic/Gold and Platinum divisions. No one ever got upgraded to Platinum. I've never seen a post about such an upgrade, and doubt that it ever happened. Capital One has the very same policy: you have to cancel the Classic card and apply over again for the Platinum card.

I did see a post here recently in which someone reported that a Providian supervisor told him the two operations were being combined in order to keep good cardholders by giving them what they want.

I thought the same at first and thought it wouldn't be possible to "upgrade" to Platinum, but am just curious in light of their new TV commercials advertising blue, gold, and platinum...

Hey RichGuy, can't you give us a citation on that? It was miles on 8/21, under "Providian no Grace Period."

You should have done a search for Providian--Platinum--Supervisor before you totally discredited yourself. Too late now, loser.

Do you have to call everybody names? I personnally (and I'm sure others are also)am sick and tired of people getting on this board and calling names and just being an all around jerk. This is supposed to be a place where people go to share and learn. If that is too tough for you, then stay away.

If no one out there has been upgraded from Gold to Platimun, what is the highest limit that anyone has received? Also, has anyone succeeded in getting a lower APR than 19.8?

I think they took Dave over $9000. A lot of people seem to get to about $6000.

The lowest APR I've seen reported is that same 16.9%.

Was the $9K still on Gold card, not Platinum?

I checked out dave's posting two days ago, and he didn't say. I gathered from earlier postings that he still has a gold card.

Also, consider this: dave said that his APR is still 19.8%. That can't be a platinum card, not even a Providian platinum Visa. Providian won't gouge their platinum cardholders the way they will their new subprime cardholders.

    RE: Providian Platinum Maybe?

I got my card about 2 months after the chap 13. Their mrkng was great.
    Plat envlope-plat preapproved for $1000.

The card I have is plat colored/ actually nice chrome strip and Providian chrome stamp
across front. White VISA label on center top of card. It really looks like a plat Card.

    The statement says visa platinum.

I called and asked em about getting the PLAT I saw on TV. They told me they had several levels of PLAT and I was already PLat.
My card does have PLAT benefits.

SO - providian makes very specialized, customer focused mktng. I am up to $3200 now, and probably will get another $1000 increase again in about a month.

BUT THE AMEX is what shows off in the wallet.

If you can get a plat. card two months after a Chapter 13, clearly the label platinum is meaningless. The only difference I can tell is that gold and platinum come with benefits while classic does not but what is your APR?

    Just Looks Like Platinum

Providian does have a classic Visa "with Premier benefits." It looks just like their Platinum card. I have it because I turned down their first couple of offers for the classic card. So they sweetened it with the "Premier benefits," which I never use.

The terms were the same as those for the Classic card, including 23.99% interest.
