Question about negative marks on CR

I am trying to clear up my credit this year, to hopefully purchase a home. I have several credit cards that have been charged off as a bad debt. Those are listed on my CR and then it appears again with a collection agency. Do I write a letter saying that the debt to the collection agency is NOT mine, even though it is because of the credit card debt being turned over to them? If so, how does this work?
I hate to sound so naive, but I am trying to clear up the bad credit and start new.
My other question, perhaps someone can answer for me, concerns a time share property purchased by my ex and myself. Maintenance fees have not been paid for some time now, we also have not used the time share either. A collection agency calls about the time share maint. fees, but I do not return the calls. It does not appear in my CR either. How do I go about getting rid of these calls about these maint. fees?
    Thank you in advance.

How old are the debts that you are referring to? When did you default?

The debts are at least 3 to 4 years old, since I have paid. The CR does not seem to make it look that way. One collection agency is listed since mid 2000.
