Possible Identity Theft? I was reviewing my credit report from all the CRA's this morning and noticed something that was troubling. Trans Union and Experian are listing my address as being in Pembroke Pines, FL. The problem is I live on the west coast and have never lived in Florida. There aren't any suspect inquiries or accounts, however, I am concerned that this address listing may be the precursor to possible identity theft/ fraud. Any advice on how I should approach this matter would be greatly appreciated. Sean
Re: Possible Identity Theft? I had a similar problem with Experian - listing an address for me in California - and I've never lived there. I disputed with my Experian affiliate and they took it right off. I'd tell you to call them immediately and dispute it. My affiliate made me do it in writing - but you may be able to do it by telephone. Mommy2cats
Re: Possible Identity Theft? A CRA may NOT force you to do this in writing. But it's a good idea anyway.
Re: Possible Identity Theft? Some of the affiliates DO refuse anything over the telephone. I have CreditData SouthWest (for Experian) and they refuse to do anything otherwise. (I may not agree with that policy but it's the only way to get anything done....) Mommy2cats
Re: Possible Identity Theft? I know whatcha mean and you're absolutely right. Several court decisions have addressed this issue. The law requires that they investigate "upon notification", it doesn't say that this must be in writing. However, like I said it's a good idea anyway so it's a moot point really. That's the FCRA. Interestingly, the FDCPA does say that your dispute to the CA must be in writing, but recent decisions have suggested even that's not necessary. FTC Vs. PCM comes to mind. If ya want I'll see if I can find it.
