someone asked me this and i don't know the answer so i thought i would post it here.

is it illegal to hide a vehicle that you are past due on to avoid repossession until you are caught up (in a month or two)? the second part to the question is do you have to tell the repossesser where the vehicle is if they show up?

If the creditor informs you formally that they intend to repossess and you refuse them access to the car, yes that is illegal.

In some states the repo man can't even knock on your door. I'd suggest checking your state laws.

then i guess my next question would be is where do i find those laws pertaining to the state?

I'd go to Yahoo! and type say "Virginia repossession law" (replace Virginia with your state and try doing it with and without the quotes.

Be very careful. Hiding an asset like that might be considered a felony and you could end up arrested. Think about how a record like that would impact your job, etc. Using the excuse you are buying time to make the payment will not help and may contribute to losing the car much faster as the creditor will use your trick to hang you..

Researching this on your own is too risky. I would talk to a lawyer. If you don't have one, get a referral from your local bar association as most offer a free initial consultation.

Either do that or get a jar of vaseline ready for your cell mate.

thanks, but i don't have anything to worry about since MY payments are on time.

the two things i did find was that they can't break any laws trying to repossess and that they can repo as soon as your grace period expires (10 days late) - interesting! i never knew that!
