Many commentators are saying that the World Trade Center was attacked because it symbolizes the power of American capitalism to the rest of the world. If this is true, then the gaping hole left in New York's skyline will stand as a symbol of the victory of the terrorists over both America and capitalism -- no matter what destruction is ultimately visited upon the terrorists. Is there a way to deny the terrorists even this symbolic victory? Yes! After the ruins have been torn down and the wreckage carted away, the original architectural plans for the World Trade Center should be pulled out and the towers rebuilt, exactly as they were before. Nothing, in my view, would better signal the ultimate impotence of those who deal in destruction.
