I still have utility bills from 7 years ago, as well as cancelled checks and receipts. I have revolving account statements and payment receipts from 1995 and later. Am I a pack rat or what?

I think that my pack rat mentality formed when my grandmother was foreclosed on b/c she could not produce all her money order receipts from where she paid her second mortgage. Unfortunately, she did not keep good records nor a bank account to pay the mortgage out of. I learned this habit from her mistake :O(

Your no packrat. You're prudent! We keep all of our stuff for 10 years with the exception of tax returns and the canceled checks from out mortgages. We'll keep those until the end of time.

    I learned the hard way.
1*Never throw anything away that you know you might need later.
2*Never throw anything away that you don't think you will ever need.
I had bought a 5000 dollar purchase from a cemetery with a 5 year bank loan.
About 15 years later I fount out that the cemetery had repossessed the merchandise.
I could not produce the canceled checks showing that I had in fact paid everything in full. About 8 years after paying off the account I threw away all my canceled checks and bank statements.
As the result I paid out $5000 and got absolutely nothing in return for my money.

    THE END ** *** ** LB 59

Dang, that sucks! I don't mean to sound like your senior (b/c I am definitely not), but could you get proof of your payments from the bank?

I currently have all of my bills and canceled checks from 1991 forward. That includes insurance , credit card, utility, property taxes etc. For some things like my insurance and utility bills, I am planning to shred or burn the ones from '91 thru '97. It is getting to be a bit much now.

I scan bills and receipts and keep them in a proggie called PaperPort. Less piles of paper in the house this way.

I keep only the important documentation in original, like a letter from a CA that will go unnamed, telling me that the account was not mine after all ;)
