Removing Closed Accounts

    This is great advice. If one is doing a refi or a home purchase and is in the position to do so, getting a HELOC is a must if for no other reason then to be able to pay off CCs in full at any time and for emergency access.

    Did you ask the cc issuer? or did you dispute with the CA?

    Who exactly do you take this up with?

    Chester,

    I wrote a letter that someone else had posted on this board, and then modified it to suit my purposes and sent it directly to the credit card companies(the addresses listed on my credit report). It was a fairly simple and straight forward letter. I was very surprised with my success.

    FICO uses the average age of all accounts on your credit report. There is no part of the average age calculation that just looks at open accounts.

    If they are positive accounts, they will stay on your reports for 10 years after they are closed, and in the meantime they will continue to contribute to average age.

    Why are you bumping all the 5-year old posts just so you can spout your theories?

    For what it's worth, the history IS computed on open accounts only.
