Is it possible to get collection inquiries removed? On all 3 of my credit reports there are inquiries from a collection agency (by the way-this agency is not listed elsewhere on my report). Is there any way to get these removed? If these happen to be on an account that is over 7 years old wouldn't they legally have to be removed?
RE: removing collection inquir Inquiries are only reported for two years. They are near impossible to have removed. You cannot "dispute" them with the CRAs. You should check carefully to make sure those inquiries are in the reported section of your credit report, or that they aren't tagged as a non-reported item. Many collection agency inquiries are not reported to creditors requesting your report. To the best of my knowledge, your only option would be to file a complaint with the FTC, or file suit against the agency.
RE: removing collection inquir If the debt was over the statute of limitations to collect and over the allowed reporting time for the CRA then you should contest it. They had no permissable purpose if the above applies. Don't bother challengeing it with the CRA, they do nothing about inquiries but the agency can be liable for violations because of no permissable purpose if the debt was expired. If this is the case, then there is no harm in writing to them (the collection agency) to request removal because legally they cannot collect or report it.
