reopening closed account

I have a couple of accounts that I closed a couple of years ago because I thought it reflected badly on your credit rating to have too many open CC accounts. At the time I was in college and I had eight credit cards. The account was opened in 98.

Since I'm young I don't have much of a credit history. The account was always in good standing and was closed in 2001 after I paid off the balance of $900. Would it increase my scores to reopen this account, thereby adding to my credit history, or should I just leave it alone.

Given how long ago you closed the account, the creditor will probably not reopen it. But it never hurts to ask. They may want to pull an inquiry, and you would want to make sure they don't open a new account for you, you want the old one reopened.

I have only had luck with this on accounts that I had closed in the previous month or so, but every creditor has their own rules.
