I made a deal with Household auto when I was out of work a couple of years ago to move one payment to the end of the contract as I couldn't afford to pay at the time. They went ahead and reported it as being 30 days late on my report.

About a month ago, I disputed it on TU, and got the report back. To my surprise, the TU report updated as being TWO times 30 days late, as of 3/2003. In reality I paid off and closed this account in 1/2003, and they even sent me a check to cover overpayment.. so how could I have been late in 3/2003?!

I sent them a letter demanding that they provide me proof that I was late or remove it.. and they have 30 days to respond.

Well, I got the response back today, and they say they "could not conclude that the status being reported to the CRAs is inaccurate, and need more information" from me to further investigate.

To anyone who'd be able to offer suggestions, should I give them anymore information.. is so any ideas what I could send them without giving them more than I should? or whats the best way to handle this?

They're reporting I was late 3/2003 when I no longer even had an account with them, and I think if I just send them another letter telling them that, I might just get another letter asking for more information.

If you think they will give you the runaround on paper, make a phone call to a manager. Record if it you can.

Thats funny. They are reporting negative information about you but they need you to provide addittional information to establish their records. Some would say to send them another request for validation, I would send them an intent to sue letter with a sideline thanking them for all the proof you need. You might as well go ahead and file the suit, make them pay you to settle.

Just my opinion, but when you know you have them, screw them.

It is Household's duty to verify information--not yours. If they can't substantiate it, it must be removed. You have no obligation to respond to their request.

Thanks Butch. I was thinking of not bothering about the first 30 day late, but go after them for putting a second 30 day late on there when I no longer even had an account with them.

Reason being that, the initial agreement in 2001 when this happened was verbal, so I'm thinking they may argue with me saying they promised no such thing, and this would drag on longer than it should. However, if I tell them that "hey, you reported me as being late 3/03, even though I no longer had an account with you as of 1/03.. what gives?!", then maybe this can be solved sooner.

    What do you think?

Oh, one more thing.. this problem is only on TU, and I mentioned transunion to them when I wrote. I pulled my Equifax report the other day, and it shows that the account is in dispute.. even though there are no late notations. I checked my TU (the one with the problem) and EXP reports, and there's no "in dispute" notation on there.

I'm thinking I should call EFX to tell them I never disputed this tradeline.. and no reason to since there are no lates on it.

I recently spent some time getting various derogs. removed from my wife's credit. HFC were the most difficult to deal with - by a long way. The CSR department is staffed by retards, and I am convinced the company tries its hardest to screw up its customer's credit at it thrives on dealing with people with low scores.

I did however have the good fortune to find a "Household/Beneficial Credit Dispute Analyst" yesterday, who deals soley with these problems. Her name is worthy of note as she seemed to be the only person I have found at HFC with a double digit IQ -

    Sissy Boan
    Tel: (757) 523-3604
    Fax: (757) 523-3221

Within two hours she faxed a letter confirming the ammended Universal Data File had been sent to all 3 CRA's, UPDATING THE ACCOUNT AS PAID/NEVER LATE, which was much better than deletion as it goes back to 1991 and had a balance of over $15k - number.

I checked with EX Credit Manager this morning and the item had already been updated.
