Report Keeping

    How long should one keep old credit reports? I have all of my credit reports from back to 1993. And can anyone answer a question on how long should you keep old tax returns, W-2's and such?

    1) keep your credit reports forever.

    2) tax records i believe is 7 years.

    And Jenz is right about #2. The normal SOL for the IRS is 3 years from the date you filed(but some states run one year longer than the federal) UNLESS you have undereported or left out 25 % or more of the total gross income on a tax return then it is 6 years. Any claims of loss on a security can extend it to 7 years.

    If you have not filed or filed a fraudulent report or forget to sign they can get you whenever they want. I do 7 just to be safe :)

    As far as W-2's I keep mine for 5 years.
