I received a letter from AMEX today in response to an inquiry I disputed on my CR... they stated that their records indicated I applied online (a year ago) and their permissable purposes was that I entered my name and SSN#, so therefore, they would not remove the inquiry...they also stated that they mailed me a letter declining me (which of course i have no letter!) They advised me to contact Equifax (who doesn't remove inquiries!) to resolve. I KNOW I did not apply for AMEX, because my credit was not and still is not up to par for AMEX. Any advice on what I can do next?????

Well, if you didn't do it, and they have a record of it, it must be fraudulent. Ask them the logged IP address of the computer where the application came from. I bet they have those.
