My hubby had a returned check from his account a few months back. He didn't take care of it. Yesterday, some law firm called and said they have the check and offered a settlement to "keep this out of court." The original check was written for 10 bucks, now they are asking for 150. I basically laughed at the guy and said no way Jose. My Q: are there any limits as to the fees they can take on to a returned check? Im in OH.
Is it possible you can call who the check was written out to and find out how much it really is (with fees)? Is it possible the bank would have the information? I bet the check is probably 10 + 10 (fees) and the 130 is probably for the lawyer. There was a post similar to this about a week ago I think. When dealing withe the lawyer guy, send everything CRRR and make sure you get everything in writing.
What state? - the fees are limited by state law. http://www.edebtnetwork.com/content/collection_laws.asp
