I'm not sure where the "never talk to a collection agency" (CA) thing came from, but I don't buy it. You only need to be patient, calm, and specific, and conduct all your communication in writing via certified mail.

Send them a dispute letter. Something simple like this:

Do not sign the letter. I've read stories about some less-reputable (is there such a thing?) CAs scanning your signature and applying it to a forged document claiming responsibility for the debt. True or not, why chance it? Your letter is just as effective unsigned as signed.

Send it via certified mail with return receipt requested. The post office offers a new "electronic receipt", but I suggest sticking to the old-fashioned signature cards. It may be a moot point, but if I'm going to court, I want every possible ounce of evidence that they received my letter. And if a signature card is 0.000001% better than an electronic receipt, then I'll take it! :)
