My mom had an account with Sears. THe account charged off in June 1997. Was sent out to RMA for collection. They reported the day of last activity as of the charge off date. Most collection agencies do this. I was finally able to get the account removed from her credit because Sears holds their accounts for EIGHT months before they charge them off as a bad debt which would have brought the date of last activity Sept 1996. I wrote Equifax on her behalf and explained this to them (all other times the account was verified correct) and Equifax finally removed the account. Her credit is now prefect. The point to this story is verify when the account FIRST went past due. Not the charge off date.
