I received a credit card offer in the mail today from Capital One. But the name it came in was a mix of my first name and my mothers last name. I never had her last name nor have I used it that I can recall. The offer went to my mothers address. Does this mean that they have a second credit profile on me? If so, any suggestions on how I can find out. The only information I have is the name and address.
I have checked all three of my reports and this name combination doesn't show on any of them. They had to get my name from one of the cra's and I am guessing it was trans union b/c it is Cap1. And on the offer is says that I was preselected for the offer due to info in my cr. And I know that I haven't a chance for this b/c I have a very recent BK on my report.
Even if I started using my married name or mothers last name, wouldn't my previous name show on the report as well as the new name. And my social would have to match wouldn't it? I'm just trying to figure out how this could happen, because I have never used her last name.
Thank you in advance for your help with this question.

I am asking because I have read on here that it is illegal for what I think is called file segregation. And I don't want to be blamed for anything like that. My credit situation is my fault and I know that I have to deal with it and work hard to clear the inaccuracy of my reports.

File segregation is usually done by obtaining an EIN and using it in place of your social security number on loan or credit applications. This is illegal and constitutes fraud. So would applying for a credit card with a false name.

File segregation is usually the use of a second and fake Social Security number. This probably is not the case here. The credit bureaus update what they think your name is to whatever a subscriber tells them they think it is when the subscriber's computer does its monthly automatic update. If you want your name listed correctly, call all your credit card companies, the people that hold open loans, and the big three CRA's.

The offer has probably been extended to your mother.

Sorry to hear about your BK.

If you are looking to rebuild your credit you may want to get a secured credit card. The best place for this is a credit union. If you cant get in one check out http://www.cardoffers.com/reviews/c...&apr2=9999&intro=9999&Submit.x=36&Submit.y=11

    Good luck.
