Has anyone been successful with self credit repair? If so, how long and how did you do it? I have 2 chargeoffs and some medicals bills. I have not sent away from my credit reports. Too afraid of what it will say, I guess. One is with citibank. Anyone have dealings with them. Collection agency wants more money than I have to give and threatens "legal action" What to do??? Where to Start??
Take a deep breath, get familiar with the FCRA and FDCPA, do some searches for topics/companies related to your problems, and read the glossary and faq at the top of this board. It's a long road, but it's definately doable. This place is really helping me get my two chargeoffs off, and there are a lot of very helpful, knowledgeable folks who will help with specific questions, but read up first would be my advice.
I agree with Justin. I'm just starting out with my credit repair journey and am having to use a lot of self control to make myself sit down and read read read everything available to me. I want to get started sooo bad!! But I know that I need to be up to speed with the laws and different approaches for removing inaccurate data from my credit reports. Definately order a report from all 3 CRAs. I did and imagine my surprise when I saw that a bank I had financed my car through (had an accident in '96, this is where all my credit trouble began) is reporting in such a way that it looks like I defaulted on 3 car loans with them!! BTW, they're also reporting one (the correct one) was paid in full and another TL (same bank, same loan) from '94 is showing as 'Too new to rate'. You'll be amazed at some of the things that show up. Read the FAQ and then reread the FCRA, FDCPA and the FCBA again. If you have questions about those, post them on the board and someone will help you. I've found that this board is absolutely priceless for information and help. A post that I saw somewhere on here also said to get a game plan. Don't just jump in and send letters, call, etc without knowing what you might get in return and having a plan for that response. That's what I'm doing now - since most of my derogs come off in 2003, I'm getting together a plan of action to work on the ones that remain. I've seen a lot of posts telling people to be patient and research. I'm taking that advice and trying to get all my 'ducks in a row' before I start ANYTHING. Again, read read read -- previous posts on the board and their outcomes. Learn from other people's experiences (and mistakes) and that will help you with your own. Good luck with your credit repair journey and know that this board is here to help you when you need it... Pandora
I set a 12 month plan and did not want to touch stuff coming off in 12 months, 8 months later 14 items are off my credit report. I did have the CRA check some activity dates on older stuff and they were found to be over 7 years old.
If i had to start this over, I would do the 1st dispute of each item online as it does the same thing.
