Hi everyone, My wife and I are trying to clean up our credit. My wife currently has a payment agreement with a CA to pay off tuition owed. The balance is currently $7000. I called up the CA today and told that I would be willing to settle this today for $4000. They are going to check with the university to see if they will accept this. The CA already mentioned that IF we settled for less than the full amount, than my wife would not be able to return to school there. My wife is fine with this. My question to the experts is: What should I get in writing from the CA (or even possibly the university) before coughing up the money? Anyone have a good sample for me, as I am not very good with this type of thing. Thanks for the help in advance.
Perhaps you should consider confirming any details about the situation with the financial aid office at the university?
The CA contacted me and said I would be able to get written confirmation about my wife being able to return to school. BUT...they said they could NOT delete any entry, only mark as paid in full. I do want to get this cleared up for my wife now that we have the money, but we really wanted to try to get it off her credit entirely. What do you guys recommend doing???
"BUT...they said they could NOT delete any entry, only mark as paid in full." Go up the food chain. There's no legal requirement to even report an account and they *can* delete. It's done all the time.
"The CA contacted me and said I would be able to get written confirmation about my wife being able to return to school." You had better confirm even this with the school directly.
